WASHINGTON, DC -- 08/06/07 --
On Tuesday, August 7th, more than 30 local
law enforcement agencies across the nation will use a McGruff the Crime
Dog® costume, donated by ADT Security Services, in local celebrations of
National Night Out (NNO). Since 2005, ADT has donated costumes to 31
agencies that the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) has recognized
for their year-round commitment to educating communities about how to stay
safe from crime.
For 20 years, NCPC and ADT have been working together to promote
collaboration between law enforcement and the community and to help
Americans learn how to secure their homes, secure their schools, and
safeguard their financial assets. Because of the McGruff costume donations
in 2005 and 2006, recipient law enforcement agencies have been able to
enhance local crime prevention outreach efforts. Recent results include:
-- In Washington, DC, McGruff and NCPC's President and CEO Al Lenhardt
will join the mayor, the chief of police, and other local dignitaries to
kick off citywide NNO celebrations. McGruff has also become a prominent
part of the local Officer Friendly program in city schools, as well as the
police department-led summer day camps for area children.
-- In Addison, IL, the police department and ADT have used the costume at
least three times per month to promote neighborhood safety initiatives,
visit children at area schools, and promote safety tips to residents. Local
ADT staff members have joined the Illinois Crime Prevention Association to
help promote private sector support for local initiatives throughout the
state.
-- In Melbourne/Palm Bay, FL, local law enforcement agencies have been
sharing use of the costume throughout the year, sending McGruff to visit
safety information fairs organized in collaboration with area businesses.
On Tuesday, August 7th, McGruff will again visit NNO celebrations
throughout the region.
-- In Buffalo, NY, ADT has assisted local police at more than 20 events
since 2006, including block parties organized by Neighborhood Watch groups.
At each of these events, ADT staff help local law enforcement share crime
prevention education materials developed by NCPC and sponsored by ADT.
Since 2006, through McGruff appearances, co-branded educational materials,
and related media outreach efforts, ADT has helped NCPC and McGruff reach
over 100 million Americans with vital information about how they can help
