VANCOUVER, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Absolute(R) Software Corporation ("Absolute"), the leading provider of firmware-based, patented Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection and Secure Asset Tracking(TM) solutions announced that the State of Georgia has signed a state-wide purchase contract with Absolute to encourage and enable state agencies and universities to acquire Absolute's Computrace solutions at a volume discount as part of their "Securing Sensitive Data" initiative. The purchasing contract was negotiated with the Information Technology Contracts and Licensing Administration, a unit within the Office of the Chief Information Officer, in cooperation with the Chief Information Security Officer at the University of Georgia at Athens (UGA) and the UGA Procurement Office.
"We consider this agreement to be a testament to the leadership and commitment of the State of Georgia and its agencies to help protect its employees and residents from mounting computer and data security threats," said John Livingston, Chairman and CEO of Absolute Software. "The goal for this agreement is to provide coverage for 35 universities in Georgia representing over 260,000 students, 29,000 staff and 11,000 faculty members, as well as other State agencies in Georgia, and will serve as a template to pursue similar contracts in other states."
Mr. Livingston continued, "The University of Georgia implemented Computrace solutions in certain of their departments beginning in 2005, and remains a long-standing customer of Absolute. This contract enables security and IT teams within the Georgia higher education system and at agencies across Georgia to extend our services state-wide. We expect to see purchases under this agreement begin during the quarter ending September 30, 2007."
"Securing data is a critical initiative for anyone using computing devices," said Stanton Gatewood, UGA's chief information security officer. "We are increasingly a mobile society and need to stay in frequent communication with laptop and tablet devices. Absolute gives us an added layer of defense and protection for our mobile resources, helping us to protect the investment in our hardware and the integrity of our data."
Computrace is currently available to faculty and staff only; however, negotiations are under way to offer the software to students. For more info about UGA's recommendations on IT best practices and Computrace, click here: http://eits.uga.edu/pressreleases/2007/absolute1.html
