WOOD RIVER, Ill., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Acropolis Technology Group, a St. Louis area provider of fixed cost IT Business Management, recently worked with the Kirkwood Police Department to locate a suspect and recover a client's stolen laptop. Acropolis Technology Group utilized one of their IT management tools to monitor and gather evidence on the theft, completely unbeknownst to the thief. Once alerted, Acropolis was able to record and then provided evidence to law enforcement personnel.
On Friday July 13th the CEO of one of our managed clients was visiting a park in Kirkwood. Upon returning to his vehicle he realized that it had been broken into and his laptop was stolen. Once Acropolis was notified of the theft, processes were put in place to alert service staff when the computer came online. Acropolis received this information immediately and set up an alerting mechanism in our software application to alert us if this laptop was connected to the Internet. On July 17th at about 10pm we received notification via email that the laptop was connected to the Internet. Due to the amount of data our tool gathers we were able to determine that the laptop was still in the St. Louis area and was connected through a local Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Through their Managed IT service offering Acropolis was able to remotely access the laptop and watched as the individual browsed the Internet, checked his email, updated MySpace and Facebook sites, shopped for auto parts and watched pirated movies all real-time as the suspect used the system. The technology used is standard for all Acropolis HeliosVision IT managed clients and is used to support business clients; in this case we were able to use it as an investigative tool. We recorded all of this information and after receiving approval from our customer we contacted the police. The police got involved immediately and worked the case as Acropolis personnel fed them relevant data. The amount of data was complete and offered enough evidence for the Kirkwood police department to act quickly to approach the suspect and recover the stolen property. This information included notebook location and usage information, the suspect's picture, age, MySpace profile, Facebook profile, cell phone number, high school attended, place of employment, vehicle information, etc. Kirkwood, MO Police Officer Tom O'Brien would be escalating the case to Detective Dennis Wigge. We cooperated fully with Detective Wigge and the suspect was approached on Friday July 20th and he surrendered the laptop to the authorities pending further investigation. The Kirkwood PD is currently investigating this theft as it may be part of a larger theft ring.
