WASHINGTON, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Household cleaning and disinfecting products safely and effectively protect public health and prevent disease. We at CSPA take strong issue with the WVE report. It contains no new data to link consumer cleaning products to asthma or reproductive health.
The report is, in fact, a review of previously released information, attempting to extrapolate inconclusive research to support a pre-established conclusion. We do not consider it an objective scientific document. The WVE report relies on studies that have not conclusively linked consumer cleaning products to asthma or reproductive health. Specifically, WVE relies on population studies that document increased incidences of asthma in occupational cleaning professionals, but ignores the fact that cleaning professionals are generally exposed to greater volumes of proven asthma triggers, such as mold, mildew, and biological contaminants. The report itself concedes that "there is scant research available on asthma in individuals caused by the cleaning products they use in their homes." (Page 11)
In contrast to WVE's unsupported conclusions, independent scientific studies support the fact that the proper use of cleaning products and disinfectants are an effective and proven way to reduce the primary causes of disease, infection, asthma, and other health threats.
Furthermore, cleaning and disinfecting products and their use are regulated and rigorously evaluated for safety by several federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The Consumer Specialty Products Association (cspa.org), founded in 1914, is a non-profit national trade association representing approximately 260 companies engaged in the manufacture, formulation, distribution and sale of hundreds of familiar consumer products. It is organized into seven divisions: Aerosol Products, Air Care, Antimicrobial Products, Cleaning Products, Pest Management Products, Industrial and Automotive Specialty Chemicals, and Polishes and Floor Maintenance.
