CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Reliant Energy, one of the nation's largest competitive retail electricity providers, has been named 2006 Corporation of the Year by the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CCHCC).
Reliant Energy received the honor for the significant and positive impact its outreach and involvement has had on the Corpus Christi community, the CCHCC announced in presenting Reliant with the award during its 67th annual Gala and Awards Ceremony, Oct. 26.
"Some of the criteria we use in selecting the Corporation of the Year are businesses that demonstrate corporate citizenship and give generously to the community through business-to-business support, assisting low-income groups and creating youth education opportunities. Obviously, we believe Reliant Energy is doing great work in those areas," said CCHCC President and CEO Joe Cisneros.
The recipient of the Corporation of the Year Award is determined by a selection committee made up of CCHCC members and directors.
"It is humbling to be recognized for the things we do as part of our core value of caring for communities in which we live, work and do business," said Gregg Hollenberg, Reliant Energy vice president. "It's satisfying to know that Reliant Energy has touched the lives of the people of Corpus Christi in such a positive and lasting way."
Since its inception in 1939, CCHCC has recognized the contributions of corporate and small business partners and has refined the selection process of the Corporation of the Year Award over the last 10 years. CCHCC annually recognizes a corporation, advocate, small businesses and business person of the year.
Reliant Energy sponsors and participates in a number of community initiatives in Corpus Christi, ranging from its youth education partnership with the Corpus Christi Hooks to its funding for low-income customers needing electricity bill assistance through its CARE (Community Assistance from Reliant Energy) program. Recently, Reliant Energy partnered with Habitat for Humanity to sponsor the building of a home in Corpus Christi. In addition to providing a $25,000 commitment and employee volunteers to build the home, Reliant donated free electricity (valued at $1,500) to the new homeowner.
