VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- 07/25/07 --
WebTech Wireless Inc. (TSX: WEW), a provider of location-based and fleet Telematics services, today announced that it has signed an agreement with the Gateway Cities Council of Governments (COG) to supply the WebTech Wireless(TM) Quadrant(TM) System in support of a landmark air pollution reduction program. The Quadrant System will be part of the Gateway Cities Fleet Modernization and Retrofit Program, which uses vehicle Telematics to track usage of trucks equipped with lower-emissions technologies. To date, the five-year-old Program has resulted in hundreds of tons of emissions reductions from in-use heavy-duty trucks operating in the greater Los Angeles area.
Vehicle based Telematics will enable the COG to ensure that the lower-emitting trucks are driven in the specific areas targeted for emissions reductions. Monitoring actual miles driven in specific "geofenced" areas enable the COG to quantify the amounts of pollution avoided through the program, and determine cost effectiveness for the government funds allocated. In addition to these environmental benefits the Quadrant System provides strong theft deterrent and recovery abilities, as well as Homeland Security support if needed through real-time vehicle tracking and identification.
"The Government sector has been and remains a strong opportunity for us, and the scope of this opportunity is quite exciting," said Anwar Sukkarie, President and CEO of WebTech Wireless. "The ability to measure vehicle performance and activity is one of the most effective ways for any organization to optimize the opportunity to reduce emissions and costs."
"WebTech Wireless provided a very strong offering for vehicle tracking services under the Fleet Modernization and Retrofit Program," said Jack Joseph, Deputy Executive Director, Gateway Cities COG. "This project requires flexibility on everything from customized reporting to a complex installation program. We issued a competitive Request for Proposals and they offered the most compelling combination of price, technology and services."
The Gateway Cities are the industrial powerhouse of Los Angeles County. Home to the Port of Long Beach and adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, the busiest container ports in the U.S., this southeast sub-region of the County provides one out of every seven jobs in Southern California. The 27 cities of the Gateway Cities COG have a combined population of two million people, who live and work in communities as diverse as their populations. Currently, an estimated 16,000 heavy-duty trucks service the Goods Movement sector operating in and around the Gateway Cites sub-region.
