WASHINGTON, July 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following today's announcement by DC Mayor Adrian Fenty that the District of Columbia would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court the decision in Parker, et al v. the District of Columbia overturning on Second Amendment grounds the District of Columbia's handgun ban, the Violence Policy Center released the following statement:
"The earlier split decision by the Court of Appeals to overturn the District of Columbia's handgun ban was not only contrary to the overwhelming weight of legal authority, but would certainly increase gun death and injury among District residents while also increasing the risks faced by the law enforcement personnel who protect all residents and workers in Washington, DC.
"Washington, DC's ban on handguns in the home has long protected DC's residents as measured by the District of Columbia's firearm suicide and overall suicide rate. The District's handgun ban provides compelling evidence of how strict gun laws save lives by keeping handguns out of homes. The District of Columbia ranks 51st (last) in the country for firearms suicide for 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available. The District also ranks last for overall suicide. Maintaining the ban will ensure the health and safety of DC residents. [See http://www.vpc.org/dcsuicide.htm for data on DC suicide rates compared to the 10 states with the highest suicide, gun suicide, and gun ownership rates, as well as a full ranking of all 50 states by their firearm suicide rates and overall suicide rates for the year 2004.]
"If the Court of Appeals ruling is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, it will not only result in the deaths of District residents, but potentially lay the groundwork for literally every local, state, and federal gun law in America to be challenged: from the federal ban on gun possession by felons, to the ban on carrying guns onto airplanes, to the ban on the manufacture of fully automatic machine guns for civilian use."
According to the most recent data available from the National Center for Health Statistics:
-- The District's firearm suicide rate of .90 per 100,000 residents is far
below the national average of 5.7 per 100,00. Likewise, the
District's overall suicide rate is 5.95 per 100,000, compared to a
national average of 11.05.
-- The District's firearms suicide rate is a fraction of the rates
experienced in states with high rates of gun ownership. In 2004 the 10
states with the highest firearms suicide rates were Alaska, Montana,
Idaho, Nevada, West Virginia, New Mexico, Wyoming, Kentucky, Vermont,
and Tennessee.

Ahh, DC, the Garden Spot of the US

According to FBI's Uniform Crime Report for 2005 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/05cius/data/table_04.html), Washington DC enjoys the following distinguished honors:
#1 in the Nation for the MOST per capita:
Violent Crime! (3 times worse than the national average)
Murder! (a whopping 7 times worse than the nat. avg. - includes non-negligent homicides)
Robbery! (5 times worse than the nat. avg.)
Aggravated Assault! (3 times worse than the nat. avg.)
Motor Vehicle Theft!
Who needs to commit suicide in DC when you can just take a walk on the street with an expensive watch and get killed for it by some thug. :P
The Mayor of DC should be ashamed of himself.
Folks - gun control just doesn't work. Really, it doesn't.

DC GUN BAN

The Violence Policy Center said, "Washington, DC's ban on handguns in the home has long protected DC's residents as measured by the District of Columbia's firearm suicide and overall suicide rate."
This about defines the term "non sequitur" because it does not follow any logical argument. The gun ban was put in place not to prevent suicide, but homicide... something that has been a complete failure. As mentioned by a previous poster, DC has one of the highest murder rates in the country. As a matter of fact, if someone was suicidal in D.C. how would you know... all they have to do is take a walk in the park to off themselves?
Further, there is the implication that we Americans are better off living in a contented, bovine eutopia where the government acts as our nanny. Try telling that to the Lakota, the Cheyenne, the Pawnee, etc. (The Bureau of Indian Affairs killed more Indians than the U.S. Cavalry ever thought of.)
Pardon me if I refuse to live on "the Rez".

DC gun ban

Your comparison of the suicide rates in DC vs. other staes misses one critical (and telling) comparison: wile the gun ownership rate is as much as 12 times lower in DC, the overall suicide rate is only about 3 times lower than the states with the highest rates. Clearly reducing handguns in households is not having anywhere near the effect on overall suicide rates as gun control advocates would have us believe. Comparing gun suicide rates is irrelevant, since there is a gun ban in effect in DC, making that particular form of suicide difficult. But if people are still killing themselves by other means, then the ban isn't actually saving lives, just changing the cause of death.
Of course, this doesn't address the point that it is not for the government to put all the rest of its citizens at risk from an undeniably out-of-control criminal element, just to reduce suicide. The suicide rate justification for the ban is ridiculous. If people want to kill themselves, that's their choice. Crime victims are not given the option of choosing to live or die. The gun ban leaves that choice entirely in the hands of violent felons. The government has no right to increase the murder rate just to lower the suicide rate.

What planet have you been living on?
The District has one of the highest murder rates in this country. Your "ban" does nothing to disarm the crooks and killers, it only affects those citizens honest enough to respect the law.
The suicide argument is specious. Someone truly bent on killing themselves will find a way. Japan, with a complete ban on firearms, still has a suicide rate twice ours.
