A new book by screenwriting professor and
consultant Drew Yanno recognizes for the first time how crucial a film's
ending can be to its success. Prior to Yanno's book,
"The Third Act -- Writing a Great Ending to Your Screenplay," no in-depth
coverage of screenplay endings existed in even the most comprehensive book
on screenplay writing. Yanno's book was released by Continuum Books in
September 2006 and has been selling briskly in its first ten months of
publication.
Yanno decided to write "The Third Act," the first screenwriting
instructional book to focus entirely on film/script endings, in part, after
noticing that no similar book had ever been published, nor did the subject
of endings show up in broader screenwriting instructional books with more
than a chapter's coverage.
In "The Third Act," Yanno offers a simple structural approach for writing
the last act of a script, incorporating examples from the endings of a
number of memorable films, including "Saving Private Ryan," "Gladiator,"
"Rocky," "Rain Man," and "Good Will Hunting."
A screenwriter since 1993 and the author or co-author of more than a dozen
screenplays, Yanno understands the importance of writing a great ending to
a screenplay. Just as a bad ending can ruin a movie, an otherwise great
script will likely be passed on if it does not end well.
Yanno is also a screenwriting consultant, has worked as an advisor on a
number of films and scripts, and has been a member of the Writers Guild of
America since 1995 when his action/adventure script "No Safe Haven" was the
subject of a bidding war and sold in less than eight hours.
He has taught screenwriting in the Film Studies Department at Boston
College since 2000. He also teaches weekend workshops, most recently
through Grub Street, a not-for-profit, independent writing center based in
Boston. Dozens of Yanno's former students have optioned or sold their
scripts, won screenwriting competitions, and worked in television and film
in Hollywood.
