NEW YORK, June 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Answers Corporation , creators of Answers.com(TM), announced today that its WikiAnswers site has surpassed the 500,000 question count, and grown its community to over 200,000 members. WikiAnswers is a UGC (User Generated Content) site, a dynamic and growing platform for a community of users asking questions and providing answers. As opposed to many Q&A sites, WikiAnswers uses a "wiki" format to provide each question with a single answer that can be edited, tweaked and improved over time.
According to Hitwise, a leading competitive intelligence service, WikiAnswers has become the second largest Q&A site on the web, after Yahoo! Answers, according to data from a custom category of leading Q&A-only websites.(1)
"Using the custom data set from Hitwise," said Bruce Smith, Chief Strategic Officer at Answers, "WikiAnswers' market share is larger than the combined market share of the next five Q&A sites: Answerbag, MSN's Live QnA, Wondir and Amazon's Askville."
Since Answers.com acquired WikiAnswers (then FAQFarm) in November 2006, the market share of visits to Answers.com increased from 5.7 percent for the week ending October 28, 2006 to 8.5 percent for the week ending June 16, 2007 based on the custom category data. That increase in US market share of visits represents a 49 percent increase based on the same time period.
According to WikiAnswers' internal metrics, in the past six weeks total users have increased by more than 20%, and total questions by more than 31%.
