San Diego Skatepark Design Firm ARTIFEX Skatepark Environments Featured Case
Study in Architectural Graphic Standards, 11th Edition!!
SAN DIEGO, June 26 /PRNewswire/ The West Side Skatepark Environment at Alamosa Center, a design collaboration by ARTIFEX Skatepark Design and Morrow Reardon Wilkinson Miller Ltd. Landscape Architects (MRWM), is a new generation of action sports parks. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it is featured in the Eleventh edition of Architectural Graphic Standards by the AIA (American Institute of Architects). Widely known as the "architect's bible," this reference book establishes standards for construction materials, methods, and practices. The commemorative Eleventh Edition is the most thorough and significant revision of Architectural Graphic Standards in a generation. Substantially revised to be even more relevant to today's design professionals, this edition is the first since 1932 to include project case studies.
The Alamosa Skatepark Environment is a one of a kind public park drawing inspiration from Albuquerque's world renown arroyo system as well as site specific elements in the city that are now off-limits to skating and BMX. "I am honored that our teams work is being presented in such a prestigious publication. Being that this is a guideline for landscape architecture it shows that people are taking skatepark design and construction more seriously and my hope is that more and more communities will realize the need and importance of these facilities," said Dorian Tucker, project skatepark designer and professional skateboarder. Various elements are incorporated in a cohesive site plan, some of the distinctive features include; the real-street arroyo segment, a brick central plaza, session-specific sculptural elements, integration of green space landscaping throughout and natural stadium seating, colored concrete, and the world's first sky lit 3/4 pipe (which was pre-cast on-site, craned into place, and is supported with cathedral barrel vaulted steel beams.)
Skateparks are shifting toward region specific parks that are local concept-inspired, have more of a socially inviting open campus or civic plaza feel, yet provide a balance of real streetscape elements and transition or bowl riding -- truly becoming parks you can skate -- and this facility is a unique response to the trends.
This facility is included as one of only two site design case studies, because of its relevance to a broad range of site design criteria, as well as being on the leading edge of a new generation of skateparks. This precedent setting accomplishment gives much-deserved professional prestige to the niche of skatepark design.
