LOS GATOS, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Veolia Transport, a global public transportation company, deployed Firetide wireless mesh network to enhance operations at its Malmo, Sweden depot. The wireless technology simplifies reporting and data transfer for fleet management and public safety.
Veolia needed a fast and effective way to retrieve reporting data from busses. Using Firetide wireless mesh, NoWire, a Firetide partner in the Nordic region, provided a solution that exceeded company's requirements: not only does the system enables data transfer from the busses, but it also supports data transfer in the other direction, from the depot to the bus.

The system consists of outdoor nodes installed in the depot and indoor nodes installed on busses, in combination with external antennas. This way buses are able to connect and start downloading data on the approach to the depot, cutting down the time needed for download. The process begins as soon as mobile nodes are detected by the Firetide mesh infrastructure in the depot. In addition to data recorders, each bus is equipped with 8 video cameras which can be activated by the bus driver when needed.
"Firetide mesh was the best solution for the requirements Veolia had," said Roland Martin, key account manager for Veolia at NoWire. "Cabling in the depot environment would have been too expensive and disruptive to business operations. Together with our integrator partner and technical support from Firetide we configured the solution that fit Veolia's requirements, as well as the budget."
The system provides fast and secure data download when busses arrive to the depot. Communications include trip data including distance, G-force data (breaking, turning, starting forces) as well as video surveillance recordings. In the future Veolia intends to transmit telemetric data and provide broadband wireless access to passengers.
