There was more than a touch of "Back to the Future" at Concord Park Place today as Esther Shiner's vintage Ford Galaxy, which she used to open the Allen Road Expressway four decades ago, cruised through the tape to launch Toronto's newest road - Esther Shiner Boulevard.
At the wheel was Councillor David Shiner (Ward 24 - Willowdale), son of long-time Controller and North York Deputy Mayor Esther Shiner, accompanied by her husband, Sol.
"It is a tremendous honour to officially open Esther Shiner Boulevard in memory of my mother," said Councillor Shiner. "My family and I are proud of her many achievements. She was a people person who made such an impact on the neighbourhood that people still talk about her to this day. The naming of this road is a fitting way to pay tribute to her dedication, hard work and commitment to the community."
Esther Shiner was a well-known and respected municipal politician who served on the former City of North York Council in various roles, including Deputy Mayor 1980-1987, Board of Control 1977-1987 and Alderman 1973-1976. She also served on the Metropolitan Toronto Council from 1977-1987.
The ceremony officially opened Esther Shiner Boulevard, which runs east-west between Leslie Street and Provost Drive, just south of Sheppard Avenue East. The new road in the North York community will help to improve traffic flow in the area.
"Creating entire new master planned communities, complete with large parks and new roadways for all the people of Toronto to enjoy is one of Concord's core principles," said Alan Vihant, Vice President Development, Concord Adex Developments Corp., the developer of Concord Park Place.
