EVANSVILLE, Ind., Nov. 18 IN-AT&T-Network
EVANSVILLE, Ind., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) today announced an agreement with the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County, Ind., to install the state's largest city/county fiber-based network. The network will be faster and enable more efficient communications and operations among fire, police, park, water, transportation and other city facilities.
"We appreciate the confidence that the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County has placed in us," said AT&T Indiana President George S. Fleetwood. "Our team will deliver an advanced fiber network that provides the speed, security and reliability needed."
Under the agreement, AT&T will upgrade the city and county's wide area network (WAN) from its current copper composition to an advanced, cost-effective, fiber-based OPT-E-MAN(R) network.
AT&T OPT-E-MAN is the company's fully managed, switched metro Ethernet service that will accelerate communications among all 46 city and county locations with data transfer rates ranging from 5 Mbps to 1 Gpbs. This system will easily accommodate future growth and advanced technologies. When deployed, it will provide greater operational efficiency and communication among the various city departments and operations.
"We will be better able to serve our citizens because this new fiber network will allow city and county departments, both at the Civic Center and off site, to work more efficiently and save time in the process," said Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, City of Evansville. "We are pleased to be working with AT&T on this project after the great results we saw at the call center and the hundreds of jobs it created for our community."
The city and county Information Technology Department worked with AT&T for more than a year to develop and design this fiber network. It will heighten disaster recovery capabilities by creating a backup off-site. AT&T will also provide around the clock monitoring of the network which enhances network reliability.
AT&T's Ethernet services have received many industry recognitions, including passing the Metro Ethernet Forum's (MEF) most stringent MEF-14 performance evaluation and receiving the 2007 Frost & Sullivan North American Market Leadership Award in Carrier Ethernet services. These awards, and recent speed and solution additions to the portfolio, continue to demonstrate the cutting-edge solutions and enterprise innovation AT&T delivers to business and government customers around the world.
