Americans can help protect their home from burglary with these tips from Security Choice.
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) November 19, 2009 -- Busy Americans who go to work without locking the door or setting the home alarm may want to rethink their morning routine. According to the 2008 FBI Uniform Crime Report, there were 1,353,258 residential burglaries last year, up 5.1 percent from 2007. In an effort to help Americans keep their homes and loved ones safe, Security Choice, a leading online resource for the best in home security systems, has put together the following home security tips:
Lock up during the day - The report found that daytime home burglaries increased by 6.4 percent in 2008 from the previous year, with a total of 697,153 homeowners and renters falling victim. Nighttime burglaries only increased by 0.9 percent (378,370 total). It's more important than ever to lock doors and activate the home security system before leaving for work or school.
Install a home security system - One of the best ways to prevent a home from being burglarized is installing a security system. Wireless monitored alarm systems make a home three times less likely to be burglarized. The door and window decals provided by many home alarm companies serve as good burglar deterrents, too.
Make home safety a top priority - The crime report findings also suggest people may be too relaxed about home security. More than 30 percent of the burglaries in 2008 did not involved forced entry. Checking the locks on doors and windows throughout the house should be part of every home's security routine.
"These findings serve as a reminder that no matter where you live, home security is important," Security Choice president Peter Smul said. "People should work within their budget to increase their home's safety, whether that means installing a monitored home alarm system, or simply updating the deadbolt locks throughout the house."
