TAIPEI, Taiwan - (Business Wire) Prof. Chen-Chiu Ma from Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, has been recognized for his great contributions to economic development of the country, and honored with the “University Industry Economy Contribution Award - Life Achievement Award”. He will receive this award in 3F, Plenary Hall, Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) on Nov. 3rd. Prof. Ma has educated many excellent students with distinguished achievements in industry and academia, such as Prof. Ke-Jang Li - the former Dean of College of Engineering, Prof. Cheng-I Weng - the President of Fo Guang University and the former Minister of National Science Council (NSC), Mr. Hsin-I Lin - the Chairman of Inno Vision Venture Capital Corporation and the former Vice Premier of Executive Yuan, Mr. Casey Chuang - the Chairman of Logitech Inc., Mr. Ching-Yang Su - the Consultant of CMI Holdings Ltd., Mr. Mao-Jen Chen - the General Manager of Evertar, Ltd., Mr. Shih-Chuan Chen - the President of Kian Shen Corporation, Mr. Shih-Chang Wu - the President of E-ton Solar Tech. Corporation Ltd., Mr. Wen-Cheng Huang - the General Manager of Tokio Marine Newa Insurance Corp. Ltd., Mr. Hsin-Fa Wu - the General Manager of Yulon Nissan Motor Corporation Ltd., and Prof. Ta-Hui Lin – the incumbent Chairman of Mechanical Engineering Department. All of these former students of Prof. Ma will attend the award ceremony. Though still more students want to observe the ceremony, seats available are limited. Prof. Ma has made very important contributions to modernization and economy development of Taiwan, and thus, has held a significant status in Taiwan’s industry development.
Prof. Ke-Jang Li highly praised Prof. Ma’s contributions to Taiwan’s economical development. Prof. Ma is truly an expert in mechanical engineering of Taiwan. The pattern of Taiwan’s industry development began from agriculture, subsequently to manufacturing of export-oriented goods, namely labor-intensive industry, and lately to technology-intensive industry. It is well known that machinery is the mother of industry and influenced the industry development. Prof. Li further eulogizes Prof. Ma for his relentless devotion and commitment in education, especially in teaching students about the concept of machine tool and basic knowledge in mechanical manufacture. Many former students of his who graduated a long time ago and currently work in industry still come back to school for consultation from Prof. Ma. Obviously, his professional knowledge and spirit has gained high esteem from every student of his.
The “2009 University Industry Economy Contribution Award” will be conferred to nine professor and two groups. Two, including Prof. Ma, will be momentously presented with Life Achievement Award. The rest will be honored with Individual Award and Group Award. In terms of University achievements, NCKU is the best winner as, in addition to Prof. Ma, Prof. Yau-Hwan Kuo from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering and Prof. Weng-Sing Hwang from Department of Materials Science and Engineering will be simultaneously and independently conferred with Industry Contribution Award.
About Senior Prof. Chen-Chiu Ma
Prof. Ma was born in 1915 and graduated from the Dept. of Mechanical in National Central University (NCU). Later, Prof. Ma studied for his advanced degree abroad in U.K. He was a highly experienced mechanical engineering expert and devoted himself relentlessly both in industry and education. For example, he served as the Director of Central Machine Works of National Resources Commission for many years, and an engineer in Shenyang Arsenal. In addition, he also has been the supervisor of the Father of Sky Bow Missiles, Dr. Hsiao-Tsung Huang, the former Acting Director of Chung- Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST) which is a research institute for national defense technology.
He has given various courses, including machinery, internal combustion engines, rotating turbine, and thermodynamics. In 1985, he was retired from Mechanical Engineering Department, but is still very active in teaching. He currently still lectures mechanical engineering processing and research project in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
Prof. Ma is good at both English and German. He has authored and translated many books in machinery, some of which are highly adopted as textbooks by many universities. In 2008 at an age of 83, Prof. Ma still published a textbook in Fuel Cell Technology.
