NEW YORK - (Business Wire) Nair & Co., a leading global integrated solutions provider helping companies expand overseas, announced on Wednesday its second consecutive year sponsorship for the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) annual convention that takes place July 10-11 in New York City. This year’s pre-convention kicks off at the Aicon Gallery located at 35 Great Jones Street on July 9th. The opening exhibit, titled “Who knew? Mr. Gandhi” explores the celebrated freedom fighter’s significance in present-day India through the works of Vivek Vilasini, Kriti Arora, Gigi Scaria and Debanjan Roy.
The annual meeting brings together more than a 1,000 journalists from around the U.S., Canada, South Asia and Europe for a series of workshops, panels and networking events and is hosted at Columbia University and the City University of New York (CUNY) Journalism School.
Among the highly anticipated sessions are the keynotes by Jeff Jarvis, new media guru and author of “What Would Google Do?” and Dr. Reza Aslan, one of the world's leading experts on religion and author of “How to Win a Cosmic War: God, Globalization, and the End of the War on Terror.” Other speakers include, ABC News anchor Dan Harris, WSJ.com executive editor Alan Murray, New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter, photojournalist John Stanmeyer, CBC Radio senior producer Steve Wadhams and Voice of America’s south Asia bureau chief Steven L. Herman.
“We are especially happy to be part of the 15th anniversary celebrations for SAJA. The group offers invaluable resources to journalists of South Asian origin. We applaud their work as a non-profit,” said Dr. Shan Nair, co-founder of Nair & Co.
SAJA also hosts its annual gala scholarship & awards dinner. One of the most keenly watched categories is the Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting about South Asia, or South Asians in North America. The finalists this year are, David Montero from FRONTLINE/World for “Pakistan: State of Emergency,” Steven Inskeep from NPR for “Karachi: The Urban Frontier,” Kris Hundley from St. Petersburg Times for “Testing Grounds: Our medicine at what cost” and Scott Carney from Wired for “The Godfather of Bangalore.”
The awards recognize excellence in coverage of South Asia, as well as outstanding reporting by South Asian journalists in the U.S. and Canada, the SAJA website said.
Nair & Co. is a co-sponsor along with CNN, Bloomberg, United Healthcare, CUNY and Columbia University.
