ORLANDO, Fla. - (Business Wire) Today at the 2008 Freescale Technology Forum (FTF), MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, unveiled a new MontaVista Linux® Support Package (LSP) to jump-start the development of Linux-based devices on the Freescale QorIQ P4080 multicore communications processor. The advanced Freescale processor is expected to be available in several months, but the MontaVista software is being demonstrated on a simulated P4080 processor today in MontaVistas booth at FTF. MontaVista will be the first company to enable embedded developers to evaluate (at no cost) and build multicore applications for Freescales QorIQ communications platform using commercial Linux.

MontaVista Linux drives millions of devices today on Freescale PowerQUICC® processors, and Freescale QorIQ platforms are the next generation of that thriving hardware family, said Jim Ready, CTO and founder, MontaVista Software. MontaVista Linux has supported multicore and dual core processors for some time. We have worked closely with Freescale to extend our multicore support so developers can jump-start their efforts to build applications that leverage the QorIQ P4 platforms rich functionality and high performance.

Having commercial Linux running on a multicore platform before silicon is available is a major achievement, said Lynelle McKay, senior vice president and general manager for Freescale Semiconductors Networking and Multimedia Group. Working closely with MontaVista, we are providing embedded developers with a way to integrate their applications on the QorIQ P4080 platform using MontaVista Linux much earlier.

Combining eight Power Architecture® cores with high-performance datapath acceleration logic, and network and peripheral bus interfaces, the Freescale QorIQ P4080 processor is expected to be the first product offered in Freescales advanced QorIQ P4 platform series. MontaVista Linux and the MontaVista DevRocket integrated development environment (IDE) have been optimized to take advantage of Freescales multicore architecture, enabling device designers and embedded application developers to create new products with dramatically higher performance. MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 5.0 and MontaVista DevRocket will be available for the Freescale QorIQ P4080 communications processor in Q3 2008 via MontaVista TestDrive.

The availability of MontaVista Linux for the QorIQ P4080 processor is another example of Freescale and MontaVistas collaborative efforts to drive increased product control and shorter time to market for embedded design teams. In addition to the P4080, MontaVista also supports the Freescale MPC8641D and MPC8572 dual-core Power Architecture® processors.

About MontaVista TestDrive

Named by eg3.com as one of the seven best new products of the year for embedded developers, MontaVista® TestDrive is a virtual evaluation center which lets embedded Linux developers run their own applications using MontaVista Linux on their choice of processor architectures using Virtutechs virtualization platform Simics. Because MontaVista TestDrive is a hosted web service requiring no setup, it can shrink the time required for the technical evaluation of embedded Linux, of development tools, and of candidate hardware platforms from months to days. TestDrive eliminates the cost of buying software and hardware for evaluations, and the hard work necessary to acquire and build evaluation systems.

About MontaVista Software

MontaVista Software, Inc. is the leader in embedded Linux commercialization. MontaVista helps embedded developers get the most out of open source by adding commercial quality, integration, hardware enablement, expert support, and the resources of the MontaVista development community. Because MontaVista customers enjoy faster time to market, more competitive device functionality, and lower total cost, more devices have been deployed with MontaVista than with any other Linux.
