SANTA CLARA, Calif. - (Business Wire) MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, today announced that its Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 is the first Linux distribution to register compliance with the Linux Foundations Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 specification for the Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM) OCTEON Multicore MIPS64® family of processors. MontaVista Linux brings commercial-grade quality, integration, hardware enablement, expert support, and the resources of the MontaVista development community to embedded developers using Cavium OCTEON multicore processors.

The Linux Foundations CGL 4.0 registration is now architecture-specific. This change was made to the CGL specification specifically to make compliance differences visible for specific hardware architectures, which was not possible under previous CGL specifications. As the provider of the worlds most widely deployed carrier grade Linux, we are proud to announce that MontaVista Linux is the first and only Linux in the world to be CGL 4.0 compliant for the Cavium OCTEON MIPS64 architecture, explained Dan Cauchy, senior director of market development, MontaVista Software.

Networking and wireless equipment vendors that purchase a Linux operating system registered with the CGL 4.0 specification are ensured of receiving all features deemed mandatory by network equipment providers and telecom carriers. To conform to the CGL 4.0 specification for Cavium OCTEON processors, MontaVista Linux CGE 5.0 met all 184 of the Priority 1 requirements mandated by the Carrier Grade Workgroup of the Linux Foundation. Full Priority 1 conformance must meet requirements in seven areas, including availability, clustering, serviceability, performance, standards compliance, hardware support, and security.

The Linux Foundations list of all software registered to comply with Carrier Grade Linux 4.0 is available for review: https://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Registration.

In addition to CGL 4.0 compliance for Cavium OCTEON processors, MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition is the only software certified to comply with two additional standards important in the networking industry:

  • It is the first carrier grade Linux to be certified by the Linux Foundation as being in compliance with Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0, ensuring the interoperability of the MontaVista Linux operating system with LSB-compliant applications.
  • MontaVista Linux CGE is the only carrier grade Linux that is certified by the IPv6 Forum as being ready for IPv6, the successor to the current version of the Internet Protocol.

"Carrier grade" is a term for software and hardware products that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. Carrier grade products require extremely high degrees of reliability, scalability, and performance to provide an uninterrupted flow of the enormous volume of high-bandwidth data and voice needed for today's multimedia communications. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition is the most widely deployed carrier grade Linux solution in the world, and is used by seven of the top eight network equipment providers, including Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, and NEC.

MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 for Cavium OCTEON CN58XX, CN56XX, CN52XX, CN50XX, and CN38XX processors is available now from MontaVista directly or through its distributors. For more information about the Cavium Networks OCTEON and OCTEON Plus processors, go to www.caviumnetworks.com.
