SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- 03/17/08 --
Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in
messaging security, today announced that Melbourne IT (ASX: MLB),
Australia's largest Web and application hosting company, has selected
Cloudmark
Authority(TM) to protect its e-mail subscribers from messaging abuse.
Since deploying Cloudmark Authority, Melbourne IT, through its Web hosting
brand, WebCentral, has seen a dramatic reduction in the amount of
e-mail-borne threats, including spam, phishing and viruses, making their
way to customer inboxes. As a result, the company is able to provide the
highest levels of e-mail protection and satisfaction for its extensive
customer base. In addition, with Cloudmark Authority, Melbourne IT benefits
from overall improved system performance and savings in infrastructure and
operational costs.
The sheer volume of spam has soared in Australia, including widespread
phishing scams purporting to come from leading Australian banks. In the
face of growing malicious traffic volume, Melbourne IT found that its
existing filtering solution couldn't process this unwanted increase in
traffic as effectively and efficiently as required. The company explored
several options and conducted a proof-of-concept trial with Cloudmark
Authority. In the trials, Cloudmark Authority proved to be significantly
more accurate in blocking messaging abuse, while generating fewer false
positives than competitive solutions. Further, Cloudmark delivered a
dramatic improvement in the company's message processing performance, which
reduced hardware requirements by up to 80 percent. Beyond hardware cost
savings, this smaller infrastructure footprint reduces data center space
and power consumption, which is especially critical for hosting companies
and consistent with Melbourne IT's sustainability strategy.
"In Australia, there is growing public pressure on both government and
service providers to clean up e-mail and stop the onslaught of unwanted and
potentially dangerous messages flooding inboxes," said Michael West,
messaging product manager of WebCentral. "We are committed to protecting
our customers by using the best technology available and found that the
high level of accuracy of Cloudmark Authority best met our needs and
simultaneously helped us to optimize our infrastructure utilization. With
Cloudmark, we help to ensure that our customers are shielded from e-mail
threats and receive the messages they want in a timely fashion. We are
proud to be the first provider in Australia to offer this level of service
and security."
Cloudmark Authority achieves industry-leading accuracy and performance
through Advanced Message Fingerprinting(TM) algorithms and real-time,
corroborated feedback from the Global Threat Network, the largest and most
sophisticated in the industry consisting of trusted reporters in more than
200 countries. Cloudmark Authority rapidly scans messages for all forms of
abuse, including viruses, spam and phishing, using an in-memory cache of
verified fingerprints that is automatically updated and distributed to
customers every 45 seconds. As a result, Cloudmark Authority is able to
stop e-mail-borne threats with greater than 98 percent accuracy and near
zero false positives.
"Like every country with high Internet penetration, Australia is facing the
problems associated with the global increase in spam, phishing and virus
attacks," said David Somerville, VP of regional sales, Asia Pacific, at
Cloudmark. "Unfortunately, while many messaging security providers deliver
threat coverage for the U.S. and Europe, coverage in Australia, especially
against threats originating in Australia and Asia, has been erratic and
unreliable. Cloudmark is the first leading messaging security provider to
provide real-time threat data to Australian service providers from
reporters in Australia. Melbourne IT and its WebCentral hosting business
are setting the standard for protecting consumers against the proliferation
of e-mail threats and we look forward to working closely with them."
