PARIS - (Business Wire) International real estate developers attending MAPIC 2009 will showcase a series of innovative strategies and projects designed to attract visitors to shopping centres.

“In these tough economic times, developers really have to pay attention to the mix of retailers within their shopping centres in order to be attractive to customers,” says MAPIC Director Nathalie Depetro. “With over 1,400 retail delegates at MAPIC and 100 retail companies attending for the first time, this is an ideal opportunity to discuss strategic alliances and showcase new projects in the shopping centre sector.”

Michael Gutman, Managing Director, United Kingdom & Europe, Westfield, agrees: “Our brand selection and leasing mix is created using a strategic analysis of market research and independent research on the catchment as well as knowledge drawn from our own extensive experience in the retail property industry. Staying true to the leasing mix is a fundamental aspect of a successful shopping centre and is part of the overall vision created for the project at the outset. Attending MAPIC is an opportunity for us to meet with top retailers from across Europe and is a great platform for new business partnerships and future growth.”

Developers are competing creatively to position their sites as high-value living environments, combining shopping, entertainment, long-term sustainability, and architectural quality. Among the projects presented at MAPIC, many shopping centres will focus on the importance of positioning in their development strategy.

With service-centric designs booming, Poland’s Turawa Park, developed by Helical Poland, will showcase a project which includes a nursery and a number of attractions for children.

Other developers have put the emphasis on cultural added value. The Millennium shopping centre in Aubervilliers (France), present on the Icade stand (France), includes an interactive TV City museum.

Environmental criteria are now a major concern for developers and Immobilière Frey will present its flagship ecological shopping park concept, exemplified by a Greencenter® project under construction in Madrid.

Shopping centres of the future will also feature distinctive architectural qualities. Site attractiveness and usability are an added advantage for retaining visitors. The Das Neue Their Areal project in Dortmund, developed by ECE Projektmanagement (Germany) illustrates this trend with the restoration and preservation of the unique style of the existing Clemensche Warenhaus store.

In terms of geographical coverage, developers from high-potential markets will be coming to this year's MAPIC for the first time, including Palm Hills Developments (Egypt), Libyamall (Libya) and Triland Development (Bosnia Herzegovina). They will join major players in their markets in the exhibition area such as Altaréa (France), Carrefour Property (France), Corio (France), Develon (Czech Republic), ECE Projektmanagement (Germany), Foruminvest (Netherlands), Hammerson (United Kingdom), Immochan (France), Mercialys (France), Retail Premium (Italy), Redevco (Netherlands), Ségécé (France), Sonae Sierra (Portugal), Trigranit Development Corporation (Hungary), and Westfield (United Kingdom).
