HONOLULU, HI -- 11/04/09 -- Four schools ranked at the top of the class this year as they received first place honors in The Berry Company's Think Yellow, Go Green Telephone Directory Recycling Contest. The contest was hosted by The Berry Company, the local publisher of the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages. The winning schools were presented with a check and recognized for their outstanding efforts in recycling telephone directories.

"We are so pleased with the strong participation from our local schools, and delighted to personally congratulate the winners," said Scott Szczekocki, division manager for HYP Media. "With our schools' support, we collected more than 105 tons of outdated directories to recycle across the islands this year."

This year's recycling contest took place on Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui and Molokai. More than 50 schools participated in the program in May 2009. Students were encouraged to take part in the contest and schools that collected the most directories per student won cash prizes. The first place winner on Maui, Montessori Hale O Keiki, will use the money to fund the school's organic garden that students help plant and harvest. St. Joseph Elementary on Hawaii will use the money for the school's extracurricular robotics club, which meets weekly to encourage students' interest in science and engineering.

Earlier in the year, the phone books collected by the schools were transferred to participating island recyclers, including Orchid Island Rubbish and Recycling, Maui Disposal, Garden Isle Disposal and Makoa Trucking. These recycling partners then transported the directories to Island Shell LLC in Honolulu -- where Island Shell processed the directories and turned them into usable recycled materials, from insulation and roofing to mulch for use in Hawaii.

The Berry Company is committed to environmentally responsible business practices, which includes 100 percent recyclable directories with safe inks, dyes and high percentages of post-consumer recycled material. Additionally, consumers may now choose downloadable directories or CDs as their primary directory. More information is available on www.htyellowpages.com.
