WHY: In response to Saturday’s vote to continue the debate over the Senate’s proposed healthcare bill, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) – the world’s largest plastic surgery society and a member of a growing list of medical organizations opposed to this bill – renews its stance that a tax on cosmetic surgery procedures is discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective. Furthermore, ASPS and its members would like to address other unintended consequences of such a tax, including the dangerous possibility of compromised patient privacy – which has not yet been addressed.
