FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 26th Annual Johns Hopkins Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 11th, 2008, The Johns Hopkins Hospital's diversity and equal employment opportunity (EEO) officer John Fuller received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service in 2007.
Keynote speaker Rev. Al Sharpton presented Fuller with the award, which is reserved for distinguished faculty, staff, graduate students and retirees of The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital/Health Systems whose spirit of volunteerism and citizenship reflect that of Dr. King.
Fuller's volunteer resume is long and diversified. He has organized food bank and clothing drives for two Native American Reservations and assisted with personal tax returns and emergency funding. A board member of the National Council for Support of Disability Issues, he moderates nationwide online forums and provides referrals for education, employment and accommodation. As a certified court mediator, Fuller also performs county and circuit court mediations pro bono. He has been an expert guest on 54 radio stations nationwide, speaking on sexual harassment and offering guidance on developing an inclusive workplace.
In the Muslim community, Fuller serves as a board member of the Institute for Multi Track Diplomacy and hopes his latest project, an exchange soccer match between the Libyan National Team and DC United Professional soccer team, will promote peace on and off the field. He has coached girls' high school soccer since 1993 and for the last five years at the Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, Maryland.
"I am honored to have received the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service," Fuller stated. "Dr. King modeled a commitment to community service that has long inspired me in my work."
Professionally, Fuller has been directly involved in EEO and prevention of sexual harassment since 1989. He has held prior EEO positions with Fortune 300 companies, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the Department of Defense. A retired Army Major and former Marine Corps Sergeant with 26 years of military service, including in the Vietnam Era, Fuller holds a Master of Science in Leadership and Business Ethics from Duquesne University and a Master of Arts in Education from Norwich University. His consulting company, At Work With John Fuller (http://www.atworkwithjohnfuller.com/), assists organizations with EEO complaint resolution, mediation, prevention of sexual harassment and motivational cultural competency training.
The Johns Hopkins Institutions' annual tradition of honoring the memory of civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King Jr. with tributes, music and community service awards began in 1982.
