HONOLULU, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoana Medical announced today that its
patented LifeBed(TM) Patient Vigilance System technology will be showcased at
the Western Regional Burn Conference in San Diego, California, on October 24
and 25. Clinicians from the University of California at San Diego's Burn
Center will be presenting information about the positive impact the LifeBed
technology has had on their burn patients.
In recent months, the LifeBed has found another home in acute care
hospitals -- the burn unit. Burn units can be among the toughest places to
work in the healthcare profession and LifeBed's invisible technology enables
clinicians to track heart and respiratory rate with no painful attachments to
the patient's skin. With changes in respiratory function being the leading
indicator of pending patient distress combined with the fact that respiratory
failure and pneumonia are two of the top complications for burn patients, burn
units now have a means to provide continuous medical vigilance and 24-hour
care to those who need it most.
"We are very excited about the introduction of the LifeBed Patient
Vigilance System at the U.C.S.D. Burn Center," said Dr. Patrick Sullivan,
Ph.D., chief executive officer of Hoana Medical. "U.C.S.D. Burn Center is one
of the leading burn units in the world and their adoption of this technology
is an amazing step towards helping burn patients deal with the incredible pain
related to their injuries while still providing them with constant care.
Early recognition is the key to a more effective patient safety program and we
are excited about continuing to support quality nursing practice and
accelerating adoption of this revolutionary technology."
The LifeBed technology transforms any hospital bed into an intelligent
vigilance and alert network. Unlike traditional monitoring devices that have
cuffs, electrodes or other attachments to the skin, the LifeBed does this
without any connection to the patient whatsoever. Patients simply rest in bed
while the bedside unit detects their heart rate, respiratory rate and whether
or not they are attempting to get out of bed, if fall risk is a concern.
And, while other devices simply "monitor," the LifeBed system actually reads,
interprets and alerts clinical staff through existing nurse call systems based
on the patient's vital signs.
The LifeBed system has already been used on more than 15,000 individual
acute care hospital patients around the U.S. and has resulted in hundreds of
"interventions" -- providing a hospital patient a "new lease on life," that
might otherwise have been lost.
Current vigilance technology is already supporting nurses in providing the
safest patient care by alerting them to hospitalized patients that start to
decompensate between nursing assessments. Something as simple as finding
patients in trouble early makes an enormous difference in patient outcomes and
enhancing the effectiveness of rapid response teams.
Hoana Medical also recently announced its new LifeGurney(TM) Patient
Vigilance System, which uses the LifeBed technology on hospital gurneys,
allowing hospitals to maximize holding areas such as the emergency room and
ambulatory care by providing continuous vigilance to those patients.
