WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- 10/08/08 -- At a rally of hundreds of supporters, New Democrat Leader Jack Layton today accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of unveiling a platform that fails to protect everyday families.

"Ordinary working families are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs," said Layton. "They want to know if they are going to be safe and secure."

The New Democrat leader said that, in contrast to Harper's do-nothing attitude, his top priority is "to ensure we protect the savings, pensions, homes and jobs of ordinary Canadians."

"We have spelled out our plan," Layton continued. New Democrats will "re-regulate the banks, and make sure no one is gambling with your savings. We'll invest in the real economy to create and protect jobs."

"In tough times, I'll protect health care and education - the services you and your family need. Stephen Harper cares about just one thing - corporate profits. He'll cut services to you but keep handing out corporate welfare cheques."

"If I am elected to succeed Mr. Harper, we will address the issues facing our economy seriously, immediately, and in partnership with every party in Parliament," said Layton.

Layton made a strong appeal to supporters of the Liberal, Green, and old Progressive Conservatives, to come together and defeat Stephen Harper by supporting New Democrats.

"Everyday families can count on us," concluded Layton. "We are on your side."
