SAN JOSE, CA -- 11/03/09 -- Do it yourselfers will get the help they need to complete their home improvement projects at the new DIY Academy at 1244 South Bascom, San Jose (http://www.DIYAcademy.com).

The DIY Academy provides comprehensive, hands-on training for a variety of home improvement projects. The classes are taught by experienced contractors and teachers who share their professional "tricks of the trade." Training includes practice sessions in addition to standard classroom instruction.

"The DIY concept is a great idea that will give people the hands-on experience to make their home improvement projects a success. They provide high-quality instruction from top-notch trade professionals in a class and lab environment," said Stephan Kuehn, a San Jose homeowner and do-it-yourselfer.

Students learn by doing it themselves. For example, students in the tiling class practice cutting and laying tile in a variety of configurations, and get the feedback needed to be proficient when they do the project "for real."

Topics include installing wood flooring, hanging drywall, and installing pre-built cabinets. Full class descriptions are available at http://DIYAcademy.com/index.php?pg=cod.

"It's a great confidence builder for the DIY novice," said Reuben Estrada of San Jose. "You can make mistakes and learn the right way at the DIY Academy, not at your home."

According to a recent poll by "Consumer Reports," 54 percent of the respondents are planning a remodeling project over the next year, and nearly two-thirds (65%) plan to do at least some of the work themselves.

The DIY Academy service will enable such do-it-yourselfers to complete their home improvement projects at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional, according to Steve Gross, co-founder.

"Today more people see the economic benefit of doing their own home improvements," he said. "Unfortunately, many do-it-yourselfers don't have the skill to tile their bathroom floor or install their own kitchen cabinets. That's where we can help. There's real money to be saved, and there is nothing like the pride and confidence that comes from doing it yourself."

For maximum convenience, classes are held in the evenings and on weekends, as well as weekdays. Attendance is limited so that all participants can get plenty of practice and feedback. The full schedule is available at: http://DIYAcademy.com/index.php?pg=sc.
