MEXICO CITY, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Grupo Salinas, a group of dynamic,
fast growing and technologically advanced companies deeply committed to the
modernization of the countries in which they operate, created by Mexican
entrepreneur Ricardo B. Salinas (http://www.ricardosalinas.com), is proud to
celebrate the success of the second annual Ciudad de las Ideas forum, which
brings together some of the most brilliant minds in the world to present
ideas.
Grupo Salinas, together with other top Mexican companies and the
Government of Puebla, promoted and sponsored this event, which seeks to view
the world in a new light, with great pleasure.
The event was held at the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla on
November 6, 7 and 8, with 3,000 people in attendance.
La Ciudad de las Ideas featured 37 presentations of thinkers from around
the world. With the theme of Re-evolution, participants shared experiences,
reflections and contributions on society, the economy, science and the
culture.
La Ciudad de las Ideas honored two prominent figures of our time: Darwin
and his work The Origin of Species and Galileo Galilei and his observations
through the telescope.
The symposium sought to restore the power of ideas with eight topics, from
re-creating, re-thinking and re-examining, to re-inventing, re-imagining, re-
living, and re-futing.
The event featured prominent figures such as Mexican scientist Ranulfo
Romo, winner of the 2000 Mexican National Science Award; the British
philosopher Julian Baggini; the Spanish lawyer, economist and scientist,
Eduard Punset; and the Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto.
Also participating was Christopher Hitchens, considered by Forbes to be
one of the most influential liberals in the world; Nassim Taleb, distinguished
professor of risk engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York
University and author of The Black Swan; as well as Francis Fukuyama, one of
the most influential political scientists of our time, to name a few.
Andres Roemer, curator of the event and President of the non-profit
community organization Poder Civico, said there is a great need to
conceptualize the direction of knowledge. The event was telecast on local
television, as well as on the Internet and through Cinemex theaters.
The final day featured a debate that confronted our notions of science,
culture, morality, the economy, and religion, among others. The audience
showed great interest in this "ring," and two minutes were granted to each
participant to express opinions.
Through its sponsorship, Grupo Salinas, along with the Government of
Puebla and other important Mexican companies, continues to promote reflection
and thought, at a time when the stimulation of new ideas is indispensable.
