As an internationally recognized community foundation and philanthropy
leader, Howe brings more than 20 years of foundation and donor development
experience to Give2Asia. Howe has a track record of building established,
community-focused institutions, which complements Give2Asia's trajectory of
growth and accomplishment over its first seven years, having distributed
$85 million for those in need.
"Michael is the right person to lead Give2Asia and guide our continued
growth," said Bill S. Kim, chairman of Give2Asia's Board of Trustees. "His
extensive philanthropic background and vision for international giving is a
wonderful match with our efforts to create bridges between philanthropists and
Asian communities. His strong management experience at community foundations,
as well as at universities, will help shape Give2Asia as we continue on our
path to becoming the leading philanthropic services group for Asian giving."
"I am both privileged and honored to have been selected as the new CEO for
Give2Asia," said Howe. "The 21st century is clearly a time when we can, and
should, expand philanthropic investments in Asia. I look forward to working
with Give2Asia's incredible trustees, staff, and The Asia Foundation in
developing needed philanthropic resources and high-quality programs for Asian
communities in need."
Howe most recently chaired the National Task Force on Community Leadership
hosted by the John W. Gardner Center at Stanford University. Working with the
Council on Foundation's implementation partner, CFLeads, the Task Force is
composed of 30 philanthropic leaders assisting community foundations in
strengthening their leadership commitment and capacity. Between 1993 and
2006, Howe served as President of the East Bay Community Foundation in
Oakland, Calif., where he engaged government, business, non-profit and
community leaders to find innovative solutions to pressing issues. As a
result, the Foundation's assets grew from $14 million to over $270 million,
significantly expanding local donor engagement and participation.
Howe has held senior leadership roles at the Marin Community Foundation,
the University of San Francisco, and the Marin Community College District. He
has extensive research and teaching experience in China, and managed Southeast
Asian refugee resettlement efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area during the
early 1980s.
