MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 8 MN-Giftag.-Emerging
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Giftag is a web application. It adds
functionality to your Firefox or Explorer browser that lets you create lists
or registries of things you want. You can then select and add almost anything
you find on the web to your lists and share the lists with friends and family.
Most "gift registries" are either specific to a given retailer or are
difficult to use, especially if you want to "pick anything." Giftag works with
virtually any online retailer and makes picking anything pretty easy. For the
first time, brides can share one registry from multiple retailers and Holiday
gift lists can be easily created and shared.
It also supports an emerging specification of the microformat standard
called hProduct. Microformats are a set of simple, open data formats built
upon existing and widely adopted standards. The hProduct specification in
particular is a format suitable for embedding in (X)HTML, Atom, RSS, and
arbitrary XML. hProduct will be related to several microformats (including
hListing and hReview) and will be an open standard. Adoption of this standard
will provide benefits to the retail industry for SEO and for the organic
marketing of products through social applications. Giftag takes advantage of
this standard by recognizing products formatted using this specification.
Giftag then accepts the product attributes supplied by the site (product name,
description, price, etc.) and auto-populates those fields for the user.
In the near future, Giftag will contribute and maintain an open source
hProduct studio application built using jQuery that will allow developers and
retailers to easily experiment with generating and verifying the hProduct.
Giftag.com will host a developer section where Giftag APIs will be exposed and
the Giftag development team will be available via forums.
This is where Giftag begins to offer the features of a platform --
allowing others to participate and build on top of it. In addition to its
support for open standards, like microformats, the opening of Giftag APIs will
allow developers and retailers to build applications that utilize it in many
ways that enhance the user experience, support open standards and permit
retailer integration at many levels.
It's free. It's open. And it's from Best Buy(R) (NYSE: BBY).
