REGENSBURG, GERMANY -- 02/14/08 --
Regensburg, February 14, 2008 - The GENEART AG has been nominated for
the Oskar Patzelt Foundation Award for Midsized Enterprises ("Großer
Preis des Mittelstandes"). This is the only German nationwide
competition, in which midsized companies are honored for their entire
fabric of entrepreneurship and their role in the community. The City
of Regensburg has nominated the GENEART AG for this competition. The
five nomination criteria are based on the overall company
development, the creation of secure job and training opportunities,
achievements in modernization and innovation, community involvement
as well as the company's services and proximity to
customers/marketing.
"This invitation to participate in the most important competition
among Germany's midsized companies is a reflection of the GENEART
success story, and we therefore take much delight in it. Founded in
November of 1999, the startup with headquarters in Regensburg has
grown into the global leader in the production of synthetic genes for
the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology. Worldwide, we have
more than 500 customers, including all top 20 pharmaceutical
companies. Our steadily growing customer base and the funds from the
IPO in 2006 will allow us to continue our strong profitable annual
sales growth in the future. In 2008 we expect our sales volume to
grow to EUR 16.5M - 18.0M up from EUR 12.3M in 2007 with projected
operating results of EUR 2.5M to 2.8M", GENEART CEO Professor Ralf
Wagner comments.

About GENEART AG
In 2000, GENEART entered the gene synthesis market and has since
become the global market leader. Today, the company is one of the
leading specialists in the synthetic biology field. Experts at
GENEART provide key technologies for the development and production
of new therapeutics and vaccines. Customers also take advantage of
GENEART services to customize enzyme attributes, such as the
attributes of enzymes used as detergent additives, and to construct
bacteria, which produce complex biopolymers or break down polymers,
such as synthetics, petroleum components, etc. Our production and
service spectrum spans a wide range, from the production of synthetic
genes according to DIN EN ISO 9001-2000, to the creation of gene
libraries in the combinatorial biology, to the development and
production of DNA-based biologically active substances. The GENEART
AG in Regensburg (Germany) and the subsidiary GENEART Inc. in Toronto
(Canada) employ more than 190 people. Since May 2006, GENEART is
listed on the German Stock Exchange.
About the Oskar Patzelt Foundation Award for Midsized Enterprises
The prize was established in 1995. Since then, the award has
developed to Germany's most important contest among midsized
enterprises. 3,184 companies from 1,401 communities, institutions and
associations were nominated in 2008. A listing of all nominated
companies can be found at http://www.oppt.de
Global and national economic crisis situations notwithstanding,
midsized companies have added millions of new work places to the
economy in the last years. The public, however, hardly notices these
magnificent achievements. The described competition puts the
spotlight on the marvelous performance of the midsized German
companies as economic engines and beacons of hope in today's economy.
The activities are also assisting network formations and create
public awareness of the success stories. When communities,
institutions and associations nominate companies, they also have
their eyes on effective economic developments and regional marketing.
As for the nominated companies, the participation itself sets them
apart. How much more thrilling is it to make the jury list, join the
ranks of the finalists or even win a prize.
The local juries of the twelve regions start the evaluations, and a
final jury then awards the prizes. In general, three companies are
awarded prizes, and five more may be recognized as finalists in each
regional field of competitors. In addition, special national prizes
are awarded for the 'Company, Community or Bank of the Year' as well
as for the 'Premier' or 'Premier Finalist', respectively. Only the
winners of preceding years can be recognized as 'Premier' or 'Premier
Finalist'. The special prizes are awarded on the occasion of the
Berlin National Ball.
In concert with the Oskar Patzelt Foundation in Leipzig, the
competition is sponsored by the chambers of commerce and industry
(CCIs), the Wirtschaftsjunioren Deutschland (WJD, young German
entrepreneurs), the chambers of trade, the German Federal Association
of Service Providers, German trade and employer associations (UV,
AGV), the State associations of the self-employed/German trade &
crafts associations (BDS/DGV) and the German Federal Association of
Midsized Business (BVMW), the European Association of the
Self-Employed (BVD/CEDI), regional councils and commissions, city and
community offices in collaboration with ministries, institutions and
the media.
From its inception, the foundation has been run by volunteers. It is
exclusively privately funded,. No European tax money is involved.
Neither the nominated nor the nominating participants incur any kind
of application or processing fees or other costs of any kind. Only
the participation in the festive prize award ceremony with the
splendid ball involves a charge. Right now, more than 200 active
participants from all areas of society are actively involved in 13
juries and five other foundation panels. Nationwide, they perform
services in more than 30 regional offices.
The Oskar Patzelt Foundation typifies corporate citizenship at its
best.
