SACRAMENTO, Calif. - (Business Wire)
Alfredo Urbina works in the California oil fields and lives in
Coalinga. He struck California Lottery officials as calm and collected when he appeared on this week
’s edition of the Big Spin show. Strangely, his demeanor after winning $100,000 at the big wheel was not much different than before his winning spin. When asked what he would put his money toward, Urbina shook his head, smiled, and simply said,
“I don
’t know.
” The grand total won by all contestants on this week
’s show was
$182,500.
Lee Hankins is retired and living in San Mateo. There are two things Hankins really enjoys. First, he’s never missed a draw of the California Lottery’s Fantasy 5 game. Second, fishing at Burney Falls with his son and daughter is a family pastime they’ve been doing for more than 40 years.
Son and daughter accompanied Hankins as he arrived at the Big Spin with an Elks Lodge pin that signified its 100 years existence and noted that he’s been a member 34 of those years. He also couldn’t resist bringing an old Irish good luck token – a four leaf clover. “It brings me good luck,” Hankins noted, “and to make sure, I’m going to kiss the machine.” And he did kiss the Dream Machine before winning $50,000. Afterward, Hankins joked that they would, “bait the trout with caviar” on their next fishing trip.
Manzur Chowdhury, from Carson, is no stranger to the Big Spin. He told California Lottery officials that he’s simply back for more. In 2005, Chowdhury won $10,000 on the Dream Machine. But the lucky feeling returned when he bought another winning ticket that prompted this week’s appearance on the show. After playing all five balls, he walked away from the Dream Machine, again, $10,000 happier.

More than 95 cents of every Lottery dollar is returned to the community in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions. The California Lottery contributes at least 34 cents of every dollar that players spend on Lottery products to public education and returns more than 50 percent of sales to players in the form of prizes. Since its inception in 1985, the Lottery has contributed more than $20 billion to California schools out of total sales of nearly $55 billion. Retailers benefit too, earning $3.5 billion in compensation since 1985.
