READING, Pa., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE) announced today that five teachers representing five schools in Pennsylvania have been awarded Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Grants. The grants, of up to $500 each, will be used for a variety of hands-on projects, workshops and teacher development programs throughout the school year.
Grant winners include: Elaine Meinhart, Amity Intermediate Center, Douglassville, PA; Marty Dombrowski, St. Rose of Lima School, Altoona, PA; Julie A. Harris, Jamestown Area School District, Jamestown, PA; Joan Reigner, Monocacy Elementary Center, Birdsboro, PA; and Sister Mary Babik, Saint James School, Erie, PA.
"FirstEnergy is proud to provide these grants to our winning teachers to promote special science, mathematics and technology lessons for our students," said Mary Beth Carroll, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Community Involvement and President of the FirstEnergy Foundation. "As is the case every year since we began our grant program, we received outstanding applications and had a difficult time choosing the winners."
FirstEnergy offers grants to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by its electric utility operating companies in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and where it has facilities.
Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up FirstEnergy's Educational Advisory Council. As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in the FirstEnergy utility operating companies' service area.
Penn Power, Penelec and Met-Ed serve approximately 1.3 million customers throughout Pennsylvania.
FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company headquartered in Akron, Ohio. Its subsidiaries and affiliates are involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, as well as energy management and other energy-related services. Its seven electric utility operating companies comprise the nation's fifth largest investor-owned electric system, based on 4.5 million customers served, within a 36,100-square-mile area of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey; and its generation subsidiaries control more than 14,000 megawatts of capacity.
