NORFOLK, Va. - (Business Wire) Local children fighting cancer received a significant boost today when Farm Fresh gave Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters a $703,200 donation to support the hospital’s pediatric cancer program. Ron Dennis, president and COO of Farm Fresh, presented the check in the outpatient cancer treatment center largely funded by donations from the supermarket chain.

“We give to this program because we care about these children,” Dennis said. “We’ve supported the cancer program for nine years now, and during that time we’ve come to understand a little of what these patients and families go through. They are remarkably brave, and they deserve they very best care we can give them.”

Jim Dahling, president and CEO of CHKD, praised Farm Fresh’s long-term commitment to the hospital.

“With today’s donation, Farm Fresh has donated $5,976,325 over the past nine years to childhood cancer program at CHKD,” he said. “These funds have had an enormous impact on the quality of care and comfort we are able to offer our cancer patients and their families. Farm Fresh’s heart-felt commitment has helped build and sustain a program that allows children to receive state-of-the-art cancer care in their own community, near families, friends and loved ones.”

Proceeds from Farm Fresh’s recent “Round Up” campaign were included in the donation. The “Round Up” is a chain-wide, in-store fundraiser that encourages customers to round up the total of their grocery store tab to the next even dollar – or to add additional dollars to benefit CHKD.

Top representatives from CHKD, Farm Fresh and “Round Up” media sponsors Entercom Radio and WVEC TV attended the presentation, along with CHKD cancer patients, staff members and families.

CHKD follows more 500 childhood cancer patients from across southeastern Virginia, the Virginia Eastern Shore and northeastern North Carolina.

At CHKD, children with cancer receive the most up-to-date treatments offered at the nation’s top pediatric hospitals through the Children’s Oncology Group, a consortium of 240 cancer treatment and research institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

Farm Fresh is a SUPERVALU company. SUPERVALU is one of the largest companies in the United States grocery channel. Farm Fresh has 45 stores located throughout Hampton Roads, Richmond and Elizabeth City, N.C., and employs more than 5,000 associates.

CHKD is the only freestanding, full-service children’s hospital in Virginia and serves the medical and surgical needs of children throughout greater Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The not-for-profit hospital was founded in 1961 and provides care to more than 171,000 children last year as inpatients and outpatients, addressing routine and complex illnesses, injuries and chronic conditions.
