LONDON - (Business Wire) Business Application Research Center (BARC), the leading independent software industry analyst and publisher of the influential OLAP Report, this week releases The BI Survey 7 by Nigel Pendse, the largest annual vendor-independent data-based research report on the business intelligence market. This years edition is based on a detailed survey of over 1900 end-users and consultants.

Based on the survey responses, The BI Survey 7 compares 16 market-leading products from vendors including Microsoft (MSFT), SAP (SAP), Microstrategy (MSTR), Business Objects (BOBJ) now part of SAP, and Cognos (COGN) - now part of IBM (IBM).

Author Nigel Pendse explains: The BI Survey 7 reveals what is actually happening in the real BI world - not what the industry experts and vendors confidently assure you. We regularly find that the received wisdom in this industry doesnt match what the majority of real-world users are finding.

For instance, almost all demos now focus on the web version of the product. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking that web BI usage is universal, but this simply isnt the case a surprisingly large proportion of people are still using client-server or stand-alone architectures.

Similarly, people are constantly told that data volumes are exploding, he continued. But our findings dont support this. BI applications, on the whole, arent very large and are not getting bigger.

However, the biggest myth of them all is that you get what you pay for: We have found that some of the big-name vendors and the most expensive products are not delivering the same business benefits or level of support achieved by some of their lesser-known counterparts. There are smaller vendors out there producing cheaper and all-round better solutions than some industry giants, Pendse concluded.
