A new study cited in an Associated Press story concludes that preschoolers in home-based child care might be spending as many as two hours a day watching TV in those settings. Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle and a researcher at the University of Washington, reports that the total time these children spend watching TV programs, DVDs and videos between day care and home can add up to over a third of their waking hours. The study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, surveyed 168 licensed child care programs in Michigan, Washington, Florida and Massachusetts.
The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages any television viewing of any kind in the first 2 years of life and recommends a daily limit of 1 to 2 hours of quality programming for older children. Dr. Christakis concurs, commenting that TV viewing takes time away from more active play and interaction with other children and adults.
The study found that children in day care centers spent far less time watching TV, with preschoolers watching 24 minutes on average and toddlers, just 6 minutes.
