HOUSTON - (Business Wire) An intellectual property litigator with two decades of experience handling matters for clients in the software, internet and media industries has joined Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Charles Baker joins Fulbright’s Houston office as a partner from Porter & Hedges LLP, where he served as the firm’s IP litigation head for the past four years.
“Charles brings a wealth of intellectual property trial experience,” said Steven B. Pfeiffer, the Chair of Fulbright’s Executive Committee. “His background nicely complements our existing team of intellectual property lawyers and litigators who vigorously protect our clients’ copyrights, patents, trade secrets and trademarks worldwide.”
Fulbright’s experienced Intellectual Property and Technology practice group encompasses one of the largest concentrations of intellectual property lawyers in the country.
“Through understanding our clients’ businesses, we know how to keep them at the cutting edge,” said Jim Repass, the co-head of Fulbright’s Global Intellectual Property Practice. “Charles offers clients a balanced mix of trial experience and technical know-how.”
Baker has litigated numerous complex IP and commercial matters, including patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright infringement. He counsels clients in IP and antitrust matters and negotiates complex licensing arrangements and related employment matters. He has taken a copyright infringement case to the U.S. Supreme Court, managed large IP cases and supervised teams of more than 10 lawyers.
He was among a select group of intellectual property litigators ranked by Chambers USA in 2007 and 2008, and has been dubbed a Texas Super Lawyer. For three years, he has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America for IP Litigation.
“Fulbright’s unique position as a firm that offers a strong intellectual property practice combined with litigation prowess that goes back for decades to encompass some of the legends of this profession is something that has always garnered my respect,” Baker said. “To be a part of a firm with such a proud history is a great honor for someone like me who thrives in the courtroom.”
In 2008, Chambers & Partners Global and Chambers & Partners USA ranked Fulbright as one of the nation’s leading law firms for intellectual property work.
Fulbright’s “strengths in patent prosecution and its work for universities and biotech companies particularly catch the eye of interviewees, as does its IP litigation prowess,” Chambers USA researchers wrote. “Energy, electronics and engineering, life sciences and biotech are all areas in which the team excels, and the group is also able to seamlessly draw on its outstanding litigation and corporate divisions.”
Baker is licensed to practice in Texas. He received his J.D. from South Texas College of Law and his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.
