SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- 10/08/08 -- Jack Layton slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper today for ignoring the needs and interests of ordinary working families in tough economic times.

"Ordinary Canadians are worried about their savings, their pensions, their homes, and their jobs. They need to know they will be safe and secure," said the New Democrat leader.

"My top priority is to protect your savings, pensions, homes and jobs. We'll re-regulate the banks, and make sure no one is gambling with your savings," said Layton.

"Our plan will invest in the real economy to create and protect jobs, and we'll protect the services you rely on - like health care and education."

"If I am elected to succeed Mr. Harper, we will address the issues facing our economy seriously, immediately, and in partnership with every party in Parliament," said Layton.

Layton was joined at the rally by former Saskatchewan New Democratic premiers, Alan Blakeney and Lorne Calvert. The New Democrat leader called on progressives of all political stripes to come together to defeat Harper, and elect New Democrats on October 14.

"Everyday families can count on us. We are on your side," said Layton.
