Cox Delivers Faster Speeds Today; Testing New Technology that will Deliver up to 150 Mbps Download in the Future HERNDON, Va., June 26
HERNDON, Va., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications announced today
that it is doubling the download speed of its most popular residential
Internet service (Preferred) in Northern Virginia and increasing the speed of
its Premier service by thirty-three percent. Customers will also experience
faster uploads thanks to the addition of PowerBoost(TM) for uploads to the
Preferred and Premier packages. This is the fifth consecutive year that Cox
has enhanced the speed of its Internet services, providing its Northern
Virginia customers with speeds among the fastest available in the nation.
Customers will get the speed increases automatically in July, without need for
a call or technician visit.
Cox's Preferred package is ideal for surfing the Web and downloading
photos, videos and music. Cox's Premier service offers the fastest speeds and
is great for power gamers, telecommuters and households with home networks
connecting multiple computers. The implementation of speed increases across
both packages is recognition that most Internet users have increased their use
of the Internet - downloading more and larger files, joining social networks,
blogging, posting user-generated content and viewing more and more videos
online.
"We recognize that our customers are spending more time using their
Internet service and are enjoying newer and sometimes more intensive
applications that can benefit from still faster speeds," stated Janet Barnard,
senior vice president and general manager for Cox Northern Virginia. "The
faster speeds we're rolling out to Northern Virginia ensure that Cox customers
can spend more time doing what they want online and less time waiting."
PowerBoost for uploads is an extension of the PowerBoost technology that
Cox rolled out for downloads for Preferred and Premier customers last year.
This cable-exclusive technology gives customers an extra burst of speed when
they need it most - when they're sending large files like videos, movies or
music over the Internet. That means Preferred customers can actually
experience speeds up to 12.5 Mbps down/2.5 Mbps up and Premier customers can
go up to 25 Mbps down/3.5 Mbps up.

Cox continues to offer two additional levels of Internet service. The
Value package, with downloads up to 1.5 Mbps and uploads to 256k, offers
broadband speeds for people who like to surf the Web but still aren't heavy
users. Also, Economy, an entry level package, is available for around $20.
"Our almost $1 billion investment in fiber and the latest technology
allows our network to deliver even faster speeds to Cox High Speed Internet
customers, today, without the need for network upgrades," stated Darryl Ladd,
vice president of network development. "However, Cox's long history of
innovation continues. We're investing in a new technology platform called
DOCSIS 3.0, which opens the door to even faster Internet speeds and a broader
variety of services that can be offered over cable's broadband network. DOCSIS
3.0 enables us to increase to 70, 100 or 150 Mbps downloads in our fiber-rich
plant. Our investments ensure that customers can continue to count on the
most compelling packages of speed and features available, at a competitive
price."
These speed enhancements are the latest sign of Cox's ongoing commitment
to make its Internet service the best value in the marketplace. In the last
year alone, Cox has increased mailbox sizes and online storage space;
strengthened Internet safety with the Cox Security Suite powered by McAfee;
and added new features like Cox Rhapsody music, free access to myNOGGIN and
the ability to call on Cox Tech Solutions, a fee-based service provided by a
specialized team of remote and in-home advanced technicians that support
computer questions and problems not handled by high speed internet support.
Customers recognize Cox as an Internet provider of choice, as evidenced by the
2007 PC Magazine Readers' Choice Award. Cox has received this honor four out
of the last five years.
