Facility Recertified in VPP Star Program

PRESTON, Conn., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Covanta Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation (NYSE: CVA) and world leader in the development and operation of large scale Energy-from-Waste and other renewable energy projects, today announced its Covanta Energy of Southeastern Connecticut (Covanta SECONN) facility has earned recertification in the prestigious Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Programs (OSHA VPP) for workplace safety and health excellence.

Covanta SECONN was initially inducted into the VPP program in February 1995, receiving "VPP Star" status -- the highest honor given to facilities demonstrating outstanding health and safety practices. In awarding this elite status, OSHA gives strong consideration to the level of employee involvement in on-site health and safety program development and to long term management commitment and support.

"This recertification is an affirmation of our company's and employees' long-term dedication to health and safety. Working through the VPP process, Covanta SECONN and its employees engage in continuous, open communication and dialogue about workplace health and safety issues," said Seth Myones, President of Covanta Americas. "This continual focus on improving our health and safety performance has helped Covanta SECONN operate smoothly and efficiently without a reported accident for the past six years. That is an extraordinary achievement and we are extremely proud of the commitment shown by everyone involved."

Each of the four Covanta operated-facilities in Connecticut has received this OSHA VPP designation. To date, Covanta Energy has 28 facilities that have achieved this designation.

"This star renewal pays tribute to the continuous, effective commitment by Covanta and its 38 employees at the Preston plant to identifying, minimizing and eliminating workplace hazards," said Marthe Kent, OSHA's regional administrator. "The priority they place on employee safety and health is reflected in their enviable and unbeatable illness and injury rate. The Preston plant recorded no injuries and illnesses in the past six years."

Covanta SECONN operates the Energy-from-Waste facility for the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resource Recovery Authority (SCRRRA) and serves the towns of East Lyme, Griswold, Groton, Montville, New London, North Stonington, Norwich, Sprague, Stonington, Waterford, Fishers Island, and Preston. The facility processes 689 tons per day of solid waste, generating 20 megawatts of clean, renewable energy that is sold to Connecticut Light and Power Company.
