CHICAGO, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- To raise awareness about the environmental benefits of going paperless, ComEd this month pledges to donate one tree for every 100 customers who enroll in e-Bill and direct debit in March. The trees will be purchased for planting at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Ill., to commemorate Arbor Day.
ComEd customers can go paperless when they enroll in both e-Bill and direct debit. By choosing these billing and payment options, customers will benefit the environment and save money.
One of ComEd's 12 Ways to Green
Going paperless is one of ComEd's 12 Ways to Green launched earlier this year to raise customer awareness about energy efficiency and other environmental initiatives. About once a month, ComEd is recommending a step for customers to take to benefit the environment. Earlier this year, the utility encouraged customers to use a carbon calculator to measure the environmental impact of their energy usage.
The 12 Ways to Green campaign is part of a comprehensive environmental strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower the carbon footprint of Exelon, its subsidiaries and customers. Visit http://www.comedcare.com/ for more information about the 12 Ways to Green.
Environmental benefits
If every ComEd residential customer enrolled in e-Bill and direct debit, they would annually:
-- Reduce paper consumption by 1,344,000 pounds or save more than 13,000
trees
-- Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from paper processing by 3,399,000
pounds, equivalent to removing more than 300 cars from the road
Savings and convenience
With e-Bill, you receive a monthly, paperless, online billing service that is safe and secure. When you enroll in direct debit, you pay your ComEd bill with an automatic deduction from your checking account on the due date. You will never have to write another check to ComEd, never miss a payment, and never pay late charges, even when you are out of town. You'll also save money on postage and reduce your trips to the mailbox. Information on how to enroll in these programs is available at http://www.comedservice.com/.
ComEd reduces paper usage
ComEd is taking its own steps to reduce use of paper. The utility's Operations and Transmission & Distributions departments are working toward becoming paperless offices. The departments have a goal to reduce paper use by 50 percent in 2008.
