The American International Group reported its second consecutive quarterly profit on Friday as the value of its investments continued to rise, but it said that its insurance sales were running about 15 percent below a year ago, keeping with a trend that has persisted since the company was bailed out last fall.
The difficulty A.I.G. is having in maintaining its core insurance businesses underscores the challenge it faces in repaying its debt to the government, despite the lift it is getting from the investment markets.
“It’s a business school person’s dream case study, because it can’t be accomplished,” said Andrew J. Barile, an insurance consultant in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. “How are we going to pay down the government with this kind of earnings?”
A.I.G.’s stock fell almost 10 percent, to $35.48 from $39.28.
