About Calhoun Vision
Using proprietary light adjustable materials technology, Calhoun’s mission is to develop and commercialize products that deliver optimal vision in patients undergoing cataract surgery or clear lens exchange surgery to correct presbyopia. Calhoun has developed, and is selling in markets outside the United States, a light adjustable intraocular lens (“LAL”). The company believes the LAL will revolutionize the cataract and refractive surgery businesses worldwide. Calhoun’s unique LAL technology allows the eye surgeon to change the power of the lens, after it has been implanted, to give the patient either far or near distance acuity or a combination thereof. Calhoun’s LAL is manufactured using a proprietary photosensitive silicone material, which when exposed to a low intensity beam of light, allows the surgeon to precisely change the power of the LAL. The light used for the treatment is generated, controlled and delivered to the eye using a machine specially designed for this application. Calhoun has received regulatory approval for the LAL system in Europe, and the first sales occurred in Germany in 2008. The Company is currently in Phase II FDA clinical trials for the LAL system in the U.S.
