SAN FRANCISCO - (Business Wire) Torchiana Mastrov & Sapiro (www.torchiana.com), the Bay Area’s most experienced independent career management firm, says that job seekers - even if they are desperate for employment in a tough economy - may do more harm than good to their health if they take a position working for a bad manager.

“Let's face it: people today are desperate to hold on to their jobs or find a new one as quickly as possible if they are out of work,” said company founder and president Bill Torchiana. “The unfortunate reality is that while taking the wrong job will meet short-term objectives, over the long haul it can actually cause serious physical and mental health problems. It is critical for people who are looking for new employment to factor this in before they sign on the dotted line - after all, what's the point of taking a job that is going to put you in the hospital in three years because of the stress? And in most cases the 'job from hell' can be traced directly back to a bad manager.”

Torchiana points to a recent 10-year study from Swedish medical researchers that found that males in Stockholm have a 25% greater chance of having a heart attack if they reported displeasure with their bosses. According to one of the researchers, "The bottom line is that our results show that there's a relationship between how employees find their managers and how they feel, physically and mentally, and not just while at work but also later in life." And a 2005 UK study reported that men who described their supervisors as "fair" had a 30 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease than those who said they were treated unfairly at work.

“The mind-body link is no secret, but what research is showing is that there is a direct correlation between bad management and bad health,” Torchiana says. “It is imperative for job seekers to factor this in was they weigh employment options so that they are able to take care of their immediate needs while preserving their longer-term wellbeing.”
