RESTON, Va. - (Business Wire) Intellitactics announced that its Intellitactics Security Manager (ISM) has been selected by DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: DRS) to serve as the centerpiece of a security information and event management system designed for the US Navys Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to protect the Navys Ship Self-Defense Systems (SSDS), a combat system that automates on-board defense sensors and weapon systems across different US Navy ships.

The largest of the Navy's five systems commands, NAVSEA accounts for nearly one-fifth of the Navy's budget, manages more than 150 acquisition programs, and has 33 activities in 16 states. With a force of 53,000 civilian, military, and contract support personnel, NAVSEA engineers, builds, buys, and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems.

Bill Rucker, director of public sector sales for Intellitactics, explains the significance of this project. The principal air threat to US Naval surface ships is a variety of highly capable anti-ship cruise missiles. Detection, tracking, assessment, and engagement decisions are required to defend against these threats, with the duration from initial detection of a missile to its engagement with weapons typically on the order of a minute or less. The SSDS is designed to accomplish these defensive actions. The protection and security of this on-board network is crucial.

DRS Technologies serves as prime contractor, providing overall program management and system integration, to integrate Intellitactics Security Manager with NAVSEAs security operations arena. Security Manager will be used to protect the Ship Self-Defense Systems MK-2 Open Architecture Computing Environment by monitoring mission-critical technologies for security risk. Operating on a compact flash drive hardened for naval system deployment, the system will provide for unmanned, on-board monitoring, as well as for the investigation and forensic analysis of security incidents.

Thom Rubel, Practice Director, Government Programs, IDC Government Insights, comments on the criticality of security management and incident response: An effective security strategy relies on three critical elements: detection, prevention, and response. Should either of the first two fail, the ability to quickly respond and mitigate potential damage is the last line of defense.

With real-time access to prioritized security alerts, NAVSEA will be able to accelerate response capabilities. Sunil Bhargava, Chief Technology Officer for Intellitactics, comments on the basis for the selection: In seeking a security management system for NAVSEA, DRS Technologies was looking for a solution that had both an internal data store with superior compression capabilities and an internal security knowledge base, and which could operate on a Linux single-service system and actively integrate with the war-fighters monitoring console. Plus, hard drives cant be used on a ship because a ship shakes when cannons are fired. By placing Security Manager on a heat- and percussion-tested compact flash drive, Intellitactics was able to meet all of the requirements.

Intellitactics Security Manager is a comprehensive enterprise security management software solution that consolidates and correlates security events, generates and ranks actionable security alerts to accelerate incident response, and automates reporting. By reducing false positives, Security Manager enables security analysts to quickly investigate incidents in order to preempt cyber attacks. A highly automated reporting system provides hundreds of reports categorized by regulatory controls and standards.
