SAN JOSE, Calif. - (Business Wire) Below is an open letter from Dr. Ngai Nguyen, Vice General Secretary of the Democratic Party of Vietnam, to Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung:
Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
With your visit to the United States this week, and in your meetings with President Bush, I urge you to agree to provide fundamental reforms in democracy, human rights and religious freedom for the people of Vietnam. Even though the major issue you will want to discuss is how the United States can assist your declining economy, it is expected that President Bush will want to focus on human rights, so it is imperative that you take the lead and concur that:
1. All political and religious prisoners who are still being jailed in Vietnam will be set free, unconditionally
2. There will be substantial improvements in freedom of assembly, press, Internet and civil society
3. The government of Vietnam must include independent parties as part of the political process
Therefore, the Democratic Party of Vietnam, which is the largest non-communist party in Vietnam, should be able to open offices in Hanoi and other cities.
Mr. Prime Minister, if Vietnam is going to be part of the world community, and an active member of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, it must improve its human rights and bring true democracy and religious freedom to Vietnam.
Thank you.
