LOS ANGELES, CA -- 09/03/08 --
Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff will speak with TOWN HALL Los Angeles on Monday, September
22, 2008 at The Regency Club.
Prior to his current position, Admiral Mullen served as the 28th Chief of
Naval Operations. He has commanded three ships and served as Commander of
both NATO Joint Force Command Naples and US Naval Forces Europe.
Following his July visit to Iraq, Admiral Mullen stated, "I won't go so far
as to say that progress in Iraq, from a military perspective, has reached a
tipping point, or it is irreversible. It has not, and it is not. But
security is unquestionably and remarkably better. Indeed, if these trends
continue, I expect to be able early in the fall to recommend to the
secretary and to the president further troop reductions."
On the violence in Afghanistan, the Chairman says, "I have made no secret of
my desire to flow more US forces to Afghanistan just as soon as I can. Nor
have I been shy about saying those forces will not be available unless or
until the situation in Iraq allows us to do so."
Throughout its 71-year history, TOWN HALL has hosted discussions with
numerous military officers, including former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, General Colin Powell in 1990, General Richard Myers in 2001 and
General Henry Shelton in 2000.
