About every fourth American child between the ages of ten to seventeen is overweight. This is the finding of a new report which has stated, "The rate of childhood obesity more than tripled from 1980 to 2004. Approximately 25 million children are now either obese or overweight."

Released this week by the Trust for America's Health, the report, 'F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America, 2007', says that incidences of overweight are extremely common now in the south and the southwest.

This, the group's fourth annual report was the first to rank states on obesity among children as well as adults. Data from the latest National Survey of Children's Health, which had been conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was analyzed for the report.

The report says that there are probably 25 million overweight or obese children in the U.S. The percentage of obese children in the different states varied from a low of 8.5 percent in Utah to a high of 22.8 percent in Washington, D.C. It was noted that eight of the 10 states with the highest percentages of obese children were in the South. The states in the south with the heaviest children are West Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, and New Mexico.

Overall the report found that children in Virginia and Maryland were slightly slimmer than their counterparts elsewhere. 14% of those between ten and seventeen are overweight in Virginia and 13% of them are overweight in Maryland.

Adults are obese too. In spite of Americans spending $35 billion a year on products related to diet and slimming services, and with the public and growing more and more aware of the dangers of illnesses due to obesity, people are still putting on weight.

The report pointed out that not even one single state was able to account for a fall in obesity rates for the year 2006. In fact, twenty two states revealed an increase for the second consecutive year.

Mississippi was at the top of the list with 30 percent of its residents being obese. It also earned the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of adult obesity for the third year in a row and ranks highest in cases of adult hypertension and physical inactivity.

Mississippi was followed by West Virginia and Alabama in the second and third places.

Other states with 25% or more of its adults being obese are, among others, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Jeffrey Levi, the report's co-author and executive director of the Trust for America's Health, says the government must treat this trend as an epidemic, dangerous to the health of Americans and must organize a national plan for combating obesity.. Obesity rates ranged from more than 17 percent in Colorado to more than 30 percent in Mississippi West Virginia ranks highest in the combined statistic, with nearly two-thirds of its adults obese or overweight.

The report also stated that the fallout of this obesity epidemic is already making its presence felt. Hospital charges in 1999 at $127,000,000.00 related to obesity cases in children from six to seventeen was three times more than it had been in 1979 when it had been calculated at $35 million. Overweight children run the risk of contracting high blood pressure, heart disease is and what was originally known as adult onset diabetes.

"There's been a breakthrough in terms of drawing attention to the obesity epidemic," said Levi. "Now we need a breakthrough in terms of policies and results. Poor nutrition and physical inactivity are robbing America of our health and productivity."

Programs such as "Shape Up" and "Step Up to Health" have had minimal success so far and there is no solid proof that the corrective measures taken by both the local organizations and by the state have had any effect as yet. Nine of the state's marked at having the heaviest kids, for example, have been introducing products such as the tracking of students for strictly body mass index, improved nutritious lunches and limiting the availability of junk food in the area.

Levi believes that individuals need help of the government to sort the problem out.

In the case of children, Levi called for moves such as restoring physical education and recess in schools, escalating the screenings of children's weight and height and reporting results to parents among others.

For the general public, Levi reasoned, "People can't exercise personal responsibility in a vacuum. If you're telling people to eat healthier food and there are no grocery stores in the neighborhood; if you're telling them to be more physically active, and they live in poor, unsafe neighborhoods or in suburban neighborhoods with no sidewalks, then you've created an environment that doesn't make it possible for people to exercise that personal responsibility. That's where government plays a role."

Americans getting heavier
By: JUD WILLIAMS , Thu, 30 Aug 2007 19:18:36 GMT

Why does the UE (European Union) not allow the importation of beef raised in the United States?

Do they recognize that the growth hormones and antibiotics are the reason that Americans are the fattest people in the world and that young children are reaching puberty at an increasingly younger age? And that middle aged men are growing breasts. Now that is a strange phenomenon isn't it? And that possibly the hormone balance in young children is being altered because their bodies are absorbing these hormones through the food chain, often causing unnatural gender changes as they grow into adults.

And why do our elected representatives choose to ignore these trends. Is it true that the beef raisers and pharmaceutical people have these same representatives in their pockets? You will notice that in any debate about the "weight problem" in the US, every argument and theory is put forth while expressly ignoring the strong possibility that growth hormones may in fact be the real culprit.

My question is, when are our elected servants in Washington going to begin investigating this matter in earnest? It is far too much of a problem to be ignored.

Acomplia - Luqaimat Combo Solution
By: Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elhashemy , Wed, 29 Aug 2007 18:25:38 GMT

It is well known that obesity nowadays is an epidemic, and in order to reverse this spread, cooperation between scientists is required.

In January 2005, I got a very simple but effective idea which proved successful with my obese patients. It depends mainly on training them several times (5-10) per day on taking micro-meals, which I named it by its Arabic name: Luqaimat.

These Luqaimat may be a single or even a part of fruit, vegetable, one or half cup of yoghurt, a small piece of bakery or sweets, or 1 - 5 pieces of nuts, etc. I aimed by this Luqaimat Training Technique "LTT" to regularly satiate the hypothalamus with the minimal volume of food. I advised for the end of the day a moderate-sized diversified meal. I aimed by this rewarding meal the satisfaction of the hippocampus.

The results of my study were outstanding: 91% of my 345 patient lost an average of 32.4 Kg by the end of their first year (14 – 68 Kg varying with the patients' initial BMI).

Since both Luqaimat diet and Acomplia work psychologically, they can have synergistic action. We know that Acomplia 20 mg is effective in reducing about 10% of body weight. However, the long duration and the high dosage of Acomplia could be the cause of the few cases of suicidal attempts.

I think it will be a good idea to start a comparative study between:

• Using a combo of Acomplia 20 mg plus LTT diet and stopping the Accomplia intake after few weeks, or
• Using combo of Acomplia 10 mg plus LTT diet plan for long.

One or both of the approaches can succeed in minimizing the depressive side effects. Hence, it may be possible for the FDA to reconsider its refusal of Acomplia.

Prof. Nicholas Christakis of the University of California announced in 2007 that obesity is socially contagious. The reverse may be also true. The Acomplia-Luqaimat combo could spread the successful weight loss trend from the obese patients to their friends and relatives. By this combo, the obesity trend in all states of U.S.A. may be reversed for the first time in recent years.

STOP EATING!!!!
By: Ruben , Tue, 28 Aug 2007 19:03:24 GMT

I'm 20 lbs overweight. I've been hitting the Gym for months and eating right to keep it from going up. I obsess and constantly beat myself up because I put that weight on over the course of 10 years (25 to now). When I see you disgusting monstrosities at the beach, 200, cometimes 300 lbs overweight, I know there's NO excuse for that. And stop saying it's "genetic" or a "virus". You can't all be an eyesore due to a bug or your parents. Put the Twinkies down! Bad enough I have to wait for you fatties to waddle doen the isle on a plane or tolerate your piggish children clawing the pile of food at a buffet. And stop saying "there's not enough hours in the day" to hit the gym. How many hours do you watch tv a day? 6? You can clearly take 40 minutes and hit a treadmill. And guess what? They have TV's in front of them!! I give alot of credit to the poor folks that are way overweight that I see working their hearts out at the gym every night. At least they're trying. Get used to not eating folks. Because in a couple of years when the economy completely tanks, you won't be eating for a loooong while.

Car Dependence causes obesity
By: Ruth , Tue, 28 Aug 2007 16:39:13 GMT

Our dependence on automobiles is a major player in the obesity epidemic. Poor city planning is the main cause of our automobile dependence -- suburbia, with housing isolated from businesses by long, wide, sidewalk-less roads causes people to be dependent on driving to get to work, and to buy necessities. If it were possible to walk to work, and to walk to the grocery store, many Americans would do it -- this mile or two a day of extra walking would go a long way towards solving our obesity epidemic.

There are other players in the obesity epidemic of course -- poor nutrition, and jobs/lifestyles that require long periods of inactivity both contribute. However, car dependence as a cause of obesity is nearly always overlooked. This just goes to show how dependent we really are on cars -- it doesn't even occur to most of us that its hurting us to drive everywhere.

Take Resposibility
By: Chris , Tue, 28 Aug 2007 11:30:58 GMT

This is not a problem for the government, it is time parents step up and take responsibility for their children. I only allow my children fast food once a week, do they want it more often yes, but I am the adult with the money so they know not to ask. I dont need the government to help me, the fast food places dont make me eat their food. I control what my kids eat and will continue to do so untill they leave my house. I am so sick and tired of hearing how the food industry is making children fat, its not their fault it s the parents fault. Take responsibily for you own house.
