BEIJING, Aug. 25 The Chinese government plans to spend $176 million to reduce air and water pollution.
Vice Minister of Finance Zhang Hongli said the money will be used for cutting emissions and for monitoring pollution, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported.
Some of the money will come from doubling the tax on emissions of sulfur dioxide, Zhang said. The tax will also be raised on chemical oxygen demand emissions and sewage discharge.
Plans include providing financial incentives for local governments that do the best job on cutting emissions. The central government will allocate money to assist poor regions with monitoring.
