Dublin - Sikh police officers from Britain have criticized a decision by the Irish police force to ban a Sikh recruit from wearing a turban on the job, according to reports in the Irish press Tuesday. The Sikh Association of London's Metropolitan Police, which has allowed Sikhs to wear official police turbans since the 1970s, said An Garda Siochana was engaging in "racial discrimination," The Irish Times reported.

Ireland's police made the decision to ban the wearing of the turban last week, saying all police officers were required to wear standard uniforms.

An Garda Siochana was "40 years behind the Metropolitan Police Service and the other civilized countries that recognize that Sikhs need to wear their turban as part of their religion whilst officiating in public roles," the report quoted the Sikh Association as saying.

The association called for the decision to be reversed. Until then the Irish Sikh community would have no confidence in their police force, it said.

The Irish Sikh Council has already criticized the decision.

turbans and the Almighty
By: Sean O Docairtaig , Wed, 29 Aug 2007 18:21:48 GMT

What is this thing about God and hair?
My own dear mother was forced by the Catholic priests to cover hers with a hat or preferably a scarf before she as much as stepped inside a church. The same priests actually came to blows with their English counterparts who sported bald patches because they thought God preferred priests to do their locks up in ringlets. What a lot of idiotic nonsense it is even to try to defend those comical cow-pat lids the Garda wear. What's the solution lads? Adopt the traditional London bobbies' helmet under which you could hide volumes of hair if you were of the Sikh persuasion. While you are pondering these earth-shattering conundrums why don't you leave people alone to do what they want without sticking your noses in. Ireland has a proud history of men who gave their lives for freedom you all enjoy as ell as a load of old "Biddies" of both sexes and all religions who wont even let you light up a fag in a public house. Shame on you.

Harpeet Singh President:
Look I saw your interview and Satwinder on RTE over this issue. Frankly you should kiss the land we let you live on and worship us. I would like to see a guest worker program in place for you and your off springs. How dare you come to our shores and demand anything. Either fit in or ship out. To compare us with London, Canada, or the New York where your kind forced the issue to display your religious apparel is beyond appalling. Why don't you take your issues back to your homeland and stay there. We don't need your racial hate no matter how thinly disguised in Eire.

The Sikh Association connected to the London UK Police may indeed be outraged and have an opinion. (To Bad)
The Anglo Saxons have bowed to your unreasonable demands and look where it got them. Pal Singh stated that "he has his helmet in a cardboard box" However puts it on when the bricks start flying.
His Turban is only an ego symbol. In the interview shown on RTE TV nobody he spoke with in the ghetto had their head wrapped in a rag.
Sikh Associations everywhere SHUT UP.
