BROOKSVILLE, Fla., Aug. 15 A bag of overcooked microwave popcorn led the fire chief of Brooksville, Fla., to order the evacuation of the town's City Hall.
The popcorn, which was soaking up microwave rays in the Hernando County Property Appraiser's office on the third floor of the building, began to burn and set off the building's fire alarms, leading Fire Chief Tim Mossgrove, who was in the building, to order an evacuation, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Wednesday.
Some had initially speculated that Mossgrove set up the fire drill as a form of power play ahead of a scheduled meeting with City Manager Jennene Norman-Vacha over financial matters. However, Mossgrove denied the claims and the popcorn was discovered soon after.
Norman-Vacha said Mossgrove's presence during the evacuation was a comfort.
"It's a good feeling to step out and see your fire chief right there," she said.
